Washington Sundar produced a good performance with the ball in the 1st ODI against the West Indies. In the 9 overs that he bowled, the off-spinner scalped 3 wickets and also gave away only 30 runs.
Sundar was sidelined from action for close to 5 months after he suffered an injury to his finger last year, and could not feature in IPL Phase 2 and the T20 World Cup.
And now, Sundar has revealed that he has faced a lot of challenges and he wants to keep improving as a cricketer. Sundar also added that he would want to focus on things that he can control and not worry about anything else.
“There were a lot of challenges but I just wanted to do what I could do to improve myself as a cricketer. That’s all that’s in my control and I was only focussing on that,” said Washington Sundar in the post-match press conference after the first ODI against the West Indies side.
I love to stay in the present: Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar also added that he was disappointed at having missed a chance to feature in the T20 World Cup for India last year. However, the 22-year-old said that India will play two World Cups in the coming years, and his main focus is now on that.
“It was very disappointing to have lost out on a chance to play the World Cup. But yes, there are two World Cups in the next 15-16 months, so that should be my focus,” added Sundar.
Sundar also added that he would always like to stay in the present and concluded by stating that he would like to enjoy his game and at the same time keep getting better as a cricketer.
“More than anything, I have always wanted to be in the present and keep getting better as a cricketer. If I do that, there would be a lot of opportunities and also the fact that I would be able to perform a lot better. I have loved to stay in the present and enjoy the game,” concluded Sundar.
