The Indian team managed to dominate the Women’s World T20 till the group stage. However, a batting collapse and some poor application led to their ouster in the semi-final. A controversy, however, stirred up on veteran Mithali Raj’s exclusion from the team in the important game. The decision was taken by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and coach Ramesh Powar.
Though the 35-year-old was on the slower side, she scored two half centuries. Mithali even went on to win the player of the match awards in both the occasions. Hence, the fans were shocked with this decision. Mithali’s personal coach R. S. R. Murthy expressed his disappointment over the same and criticized the Indian skipper.
Mithali was terribly disappointed after not being picked in the game
For a cricketer of Mithali’s calibre, it surely came as a shock when she wasn’t a part of the playing XI. She has been regarded as one of the finest batters in world cricket. Murthy asserted that the veteran was looking forward to playing the game and even had a conversation with her before the match.
“Mithali was told after the warm-up session on the morning of the semifinal that she doesn’t figure in the playing eleven, leaving her terribly disappointed. Only last night, I spoke to her and she looked mentally and physically geared up. She even hinted that she might not open but would play in the middle-order. I told her just to enjoy batting in any position she gets a chance.” he was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
Not the way to treat someone who gave her everything to the game
As India were losing their way in the semi-final, they looked upon someone who could anchor the innings. As much as she would be willing to step out at the crease, Mithali could just watch. However, despite the loss, Harmanpreet backed her decision. This wasn’t received well by Murthy who felt that it was unjust treatment with such an experienced campaigner.
“However, given Mithali’s stature and the fact that she was the player of the match twice in this World Cup, logically she should have been there given her experience and class for such a big match. What is extremely disappointing is the statement by the captain that she doesn’t regret dropping Mithali for the semifinal. This is not the way to treat someone who gave her everything for the game,” he stated.
