It is a dream come true moment for the 21-year old leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi as he has made his international debut in the first T20I against West Indies. The young leg-spinner was rewarded with a maiden call-up for the West Indies series following a fruitful campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year.

Hailing from Jodhpur Rajasthan, Bishnoi under the guidance of Rahul Dravid impressed with his performance in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, where he finished as the leading wicket-taker.

The young leg-spinner was one of the most sought-after uncapped players in 2020 IPL auction, with several franchises showing keen interest in him. That included Punjab, who had won the bidding war for him with Mumbai Indians to bag him for Rs 2 crore.

Bishnoi then quickly became the lead spinner for Punjab, and took 12 wickets in 14 matches in his first season, and in 2021, he had 12 wickets from nine matches. Overall, he has an economy rate of 6.95. Ahead of the mega auctions, LSG were quick to pick Bishnoi as their third  player at a cost of INR 4 crore. It is believed that skipper KL Rahul and mentor Gautam Gambhir made the call of retaining the spinner.

Bishnoi wanted to become a fast bowler

Bishnoi, born on September 5, 2000 in a small village of Birami Rajasthan, began his professional career as a fast bowler but his childhood coach advised him to bowl spin. Ravi Bishnoi began his cricketing journey in Jodhpur, although because of a lack of proper facilities, Bishnoi, along with his friends and the help of two coaches, built a cricket academy called ‘Spartans Cricket Academy’ where they themselves had to work as ‘labourers’ owing to financial issues.

Bishnoi nearly gave up on cricket, after he was rejected in Rajasthan’s U19 circuit trials. With his father being a school headmaster by profession, he wanted his son to focus on his studies. However, with further help from his coaches, he got another chance and raised through the ranks after being selected in Rajasthan U-19 team.

Having made his debut for India now, Ravi Bishnoi will be keen on performing consistently and seal his place in the side. Meanwhile, Twitter was delighted to see the youngster getting a chance and hoped that he does well at the highest level.
