Australia named the all-rounder Moises Henriques in their squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka and that has raised a lot of eyebrows. The selectors were criticised as many believe that the off-spin bowling all-rounder Glenn Maxwell would have been more deserving candidate considering the subcontinent conditions.

Speaking to the media in Colombo on Tuesday, Henriques said that he thought his tour to South Africa in 2014 would be his last tour and this was a surprise for the all-rounder. “I’m still soaking it up at the moment because it’s been a while. I think my last Test tour was the South African tour (in 2014),” he said.

The selectors might have also considered the fact that, Henriques is a much better player on spinning tracks and had a good Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He was a part of the IPL champion side, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The 29-year old believes that he could do well in Sri Lanka, with the experience of playing in India, where the conditions are similar. “I hope I have improved (since the Indian tour of 2013) and learned how hard Test cricket actually is to back up day after day and Test after Test,” he said. “I know it is not just about one good performance, you have to churn it out and be as good as long as possible.”

He is confident of performing well in the series and believes that he can do better than what he had done in the Indian tour in 2013. “I certainly think I have improved as a cricketer, he added. Given the opportunity, I think I can do better than then (the Indian tour of 2013). I definitely feel more comfortable around the group and in my game,” Henriques concluded.
