Australia have attained an unassailable 3-0 lead in the ongoing Ashes series, with the Boxing Day Test approaching the Australians will have something to worry about. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine has not travelled with the team to Melbourne and has decided to stay in Hobart after his father-in-law suffered a stroke.

Paine was on the verge of retiring last season but his recent form has restored the faith and perspective in his career that could see him wear the Baggy Green for another few years. He was picked in the Ashes squad ahead of regular keeper Matthew Wade given his skill behind the stumps.

Aussies could go in without a full-time wicketkeeper

The expectation remains that Paine will play but a final decision is yet to be made. The Tasmanian will not join the team any time before Australia‘s first practice session on Saturday.

“Tim Paine has not travelled with the squad to Melbourne due to personal reasons. An update on his travel plans will be provided in due course,” a statement from the team read on Friday.

Paine’s inclusion in the Ashes squad came as a shock to everyone but has proved to be sort of a masterstroke in Australia’s favour. Cricket Australia (CA) is not planning to name an official replacement, Cameron Bancroft and Peter Handscomb can keep wickets in Paine’s absence.

His form right through the series has been astonishing, his scintillating glovework and his useful runs lower down the order have helped Australia find a long-term wicketkeeper. The 33-year-old will not want to miss the Boxing Day Test as he will want to make the wicketkeeper’s spot his own.

Australia will also miss the services of Mitchell Starc in the 4th Test, Starc was seen hobbling at the Melbourne airport after an ankle injury. They will have their worries with both Paine and Starc, it might as well pave way for Peter Handscomb‘s re-inclusion in the playing XI.
