New Zealand have added Otago Volts all-rounder Anaru Kitchen in their squad for the 3-match T20I series against Windies. The 33-year-old Kitchen has called the moment a very special one for him and his family. With his inclusion in the squad, Todd Astle misses his place from the side for the series.

New Zealand will face Windies today in the first T20I at Oval. Earlier, The Blackcaps whitewashed the visitors in the three-match ODI series. Kitchen, who might make his debut in the first T20I spoke to the media about the call-up to the national side and said that it feels special to get the opportunity to play for the national side after performing well in the domestic arena.

Excited to play

“I’ve been doing my job well with Otago, and that’s all I’ve really been focusing on,” he said. He also said that he deserves the chance after working so hard for so many years. “To get the rewards of a call-up is very, very special to me and my family. To play as long as I have and to finally get that reward for all those years of playing domestic cricket is something that I’ve worked towards my whole life. I think I’ve deserved it with all my other responses,” said the all-rounder to tvnz.co.nz.

He made his first-class debut for Northern Districts way back in 2009 and has scored over 7000 runs and has picked 23 wickets. In his T20 career, he has scored 1490 runs with an average of 20.41 and strike rate of 123.

Who will miss?

If Kitchen gets his maiden international cap, he will be playing under the captaincy of Tim Southee as Williamson will be unavailable for the first game. He will join the side for the 2nd and 3rd T20 games. Trent Boult who was named the player of the series for his brilliant performance with the ball in the ODI series too will miss the first two games and can make a return to the side for the last game.
