Sir Garfield Sobers is considered to be the greatest all-rounder in the history of Test cricket. Only other player who can claim the title to be the best all-rounder in Test cricket is South Africa’s Jacques Kallis.

Sir Sobers hit 365 as his first Test century, which is the highest score for anyone scoring his first century in Test cricket. He achieved this feat against Pakistan in 1958. During his innings, he also broke the record for the highest Test score, a record held by Sir Len Hutton who had scored 364 against Australia.

Mahela Jayawardene scored 374 against South Africa in 2006. He was the captain of his team and this score is also the highest Test score by a right-handed batsman. Jayawardene also made 624 runs with Kumar Sangakkara who scored 287, another world record. This is the highest partnership for any wicket in Test cricket. This score is the fourth-highest score by a batsman in Test history in a single innings.

Brian Lara always had the temperament and the essentials to play a big knock and he fulfilled his immense talent scoring the record breaking 375 against England in 1994 at St. John’s. in the process, he broke the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket, previously held by Sir Gary Sobers for 36 years.

Andy Sandham scored the first ever triple century, 325 in Test history, breaking Tip Foster’s record of 287 runs to claim the record for the highest individual score. He scored another 50 runs in the next innings, making him the first batsman to score a triple-century and a fifty in the same Test.

Unfortunately, Sandham was 37 years old at that stage and got injured before England’s next tour and then World War II broke out, making this his last Test. This gave him another record for the highest score by a batsman in his last Test.

Brian Lara’s record of 375 stood for 9 years before Matthew Hayden demolished the record by scoring 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003. This is the highest score ever by an Australian, highest score ever made by a batsman in Australia and the highest score at the Perth ground.

Widely regarded by the world as the best Australian batsman after Don Bradman, Greg Chappell hit 247* and 133 against New Zealand in Wellington, 1974. His record of scoring 380 runs stood until Graham Gooch broke that record against India.

Another interesting fact about Greg Chappell’s record is that apart from him scoring centuries in both innings, his brother Ian Chappell also scored centuries in both innings, the only instance of brothers scoring centuries in both innings of a Test match. Ian scored 145 and 121. The brothers added 264 runs in the first innings and 86 in the second innings of the Test.<strong>  </strong>

Brian Lara became the only batsman in Test history to reclaim the record of the highest individual score when he broke the 400 runs barrier against England in 2004 in St. John’s. Yes, Lara once again broke the record of highest individual score in Test history against the same opponents at the same ground, 10 years apart.

He hit 43 fours and 4 sixes in his 582 ball sojourn. West Indies declared as soon as he reached 400. He broke Hayden’s record of 380 which stood for barely 6 months. Brian Lara is the only batsman in first-class history to hit centuries in multiples of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500.

Kumar Sangakkara was still making tons of runs in the twilight of his career and fulfilled one of his long-standing wishes of scoring a triple hundred against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2014. He hit 32 fours and 8 sixes in his innings.

Sanga went one better and hit 105 in the second innings, becoming only the second player to achieve this feat after Graham Gooch to hit a triple century and a century in the same Test.

Mark Taylor made his stay in Peshawar worthwhile by scoring 334* in the first innings of the 2<sup>nd</sup> Test of the 1998 series. He declared the innings when he reached 334 so that he could remain on the same score as his idol, Sir Don Bradman.

Taylor also scored 92 in the second innings before being bowled by Aamer Sohail. He almost became the second person to score a triple and single century in the same Test.

Graham Gooch was going through a lean phase in the 1990s until India arrived to play a 3-Test series. The first Test of the series was played at the Lord’s and Gooch knew that luck was on his side when he was dropped by Indian keeper Kiran More on 36. He went on to make 333 runs off 485 balls hitting 43 fours and 3 sixes. England scored 653/4 dec.

India barely saved the follow-on thanks to Kapil Dev hitting 4 sixes off 4 balls bowled by Eddie Hemmings. This gave Gooch the chance to score yet another hundred in the Test and he took the chance full on making 123 in the second innings and becoming the first batsman to score a triple-century and a century in the same Test.

He also became the first batsman to score 400 runs in a single Test, breaking Greg Chappell’s record of 380 runs. Gooch’s record still stands tall despite 25 years passing by, no other batsman has been able to score 450 runs again.

This score is the fourth-highest score by a batsman in Test history in a single innings.</p>
<h4><strong>8. Brian Lara – 375:</strong></h4>

<p>Brian Lara always had the temperament and the essentials to play a big knock and he fulfilled his immense talent scoring the record breaking 375 against England in 1994 at St. John’s. in the process, he broke the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket, previously held by Sir Gary Sobers for 36 years.</p>
<h4><strong>7. Andy Sandham – 375:</strong></h4>

<p>Andy Sandham scored the first ever triple century, 325 in Test history, breaking Tip Foster’s record of 287 runs to claim the record for the highest individual score. He scored another 50 runs in the next innings, making him the first batsman to score a triple-century and a fifty in the same Test.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, Sandham was 37 years old at that stage and got injured before England’s next tour and then World War II broke out, making this his last Test. This gave him another record for the highest score by a batsman in his last Test.</p>
<h4><strong>6. Matthew Hayden – 380:</strong></h4>

<p>Brian Lara’s record of 375 stood for 9 years before Matthew Hayden demolished the record by scoring 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003. This is the highest score ever by an Australian, highest score ever made by a batsman in Australia and the highest score at the Perth ground.</p>
<h4><strong>5. Greg Chappell – 380:</strong></h4>

<p>Widely regarded by the world as the best Australian batsman after Don Bradman, Greg Chappell hit 247* and 133 against New Zealand in Wellington, 1974. His record of scoring 380 runs stood until Graham Gooch broke that record against India.</p>
<p>Another interesting fact about Greg Chappell’s record is that apart from him scoring centuries in both innings, his brother Ian Chappell also scored centuries in both innings, the only instance of brothers scoring centuries in both innings of a Test match. Ian scored 145 and 121. The brothers added 264 runs in the first innings and 86 in the second innings of the Test.<strong>  </strong></p>
<h4><strong>4. Brian Lara – 400:</strong></h4>

<p>Brian Lara became the only batsman in Test history to reclaim the record of the highest individual score when he broke the 400 runs barrier against England in 2004 in St. John’s. Yes, Lara once again broke the record of highest individual score in Test history against the same opponents at the same ground, 10 years apart.</p>
<p>He hit 43 fours and 4 sixes in his 582 ball sojourn. West Indies declared as soon as he reached 400. He broke Hayden’s record of 380 which stood for barely 6 months. Brian Lara is the only batsman in first-class history to hit centuries in multiples of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500.</p>
<h4><strong>3. Kumar Sangakkara – 424:</strong></h4>

<p>Kumar Sangakkara was still making tons of runs in the twilight of his career and fulfilled one of his long-standing wishes of scoring a triple hundred against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2014. He hit 32 fours and 8 sixes in his innings.</p>
<p>Sanga went one better and hit 105 in the second innings, becoming only the second player to achieve this feat after Graham Gooch to hit a triple century and a century in the same Test.</p>
<h4><strong>2. Mark Taylor – 426:</strong></h4>

<p>Mark Taylor made his stay in Peshawar worthwhile by scoring 334* in the first innings of the 2<sup>nd</sup> Test of the 1998 series. He declared the innings when he reached 334 so that he could remain on the same score as his idol, Sir Don Bradman.</p>
<p>Taylor also scored 92 in the second innings before being bowled by Aamer Sohail. He almost became the second person to score a triple and single century in the same Test.</p>
<h4><strong>1. Graham Gooch – 456:</strong></h4>

<p>Graham Gooch was going through a lean phase in the 1990s until India arrived to play a 3-Test series. The first Test of the series was played at the Lord’s and Gooch knew that luck was on his side when he was dropped by Indian keeper Kiran More on 36. He went on to make 333 runs off 485 balls hitting 43 fours and 3 sixes. England scored 653/4 dec.</p>
<p>India barely saved the follow-on thanks to Kapil Dev hitting 4 sixes off 4 balls bowled by Eddie Hemmings. This gave Gooch the chance to score yet another hundred in the Test and he took the chance full on making 123 in the second innings and becoming the first batsman to score a triple-century and a century in the same Test.</p>
<p>He also became the first batsman to score 400 runs in a single Test, breaking Greg Chappell’s record of 380 runs. Gooch’s record still stands tall despite 25 years passing by, no other batsman has been able to score 450 runs again.</p>
