England defeated New Zealand by two runs in a thriller in the ongoing T20I tri-series in Hamilton on Sunday but failed to qualify for the final. The game was also England’s 100th game in the shortest format and became only the fourth team in the world to cross the three-figure mark. However, despite the victory, their coach Trevor Bayliss is of the opinion that the players should be allowed to play only in franchise-based competition and then come together to play the ICC World T20.
Almost all the countries have their own T20 leagues with Indian Premier League (IPL) leading the way given its popularity all over the world. Even the spectators love watching the shortest format which ends in just over three hours. The recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia was watched by more than a million people which is the testament to where the game is heading nowadays. Even England has launched their first ever franchise-based T20 tournament in addition to T20 Blast and will commence in 2020.
I would just let the franchises play
England head coach Trevor Bayliss believed that the T20 International games should be scrapped and only the franchise cricket should continue. “I wouldn’t play T20 Internationals. If you want to play a World Cup every four years, maybe six months before let international teams play T20. I would just let the franchises play,” he told Sky Sports after the game on Sunday.
England team is travelling since October 2017 and is currently in New Zealand where they will play five-match ODI series and a couple of Test matches after the end of the T20I tri-series. The first ODI will be played on February 25 in Hamilton and will go on until March 10. The tussle in longest format will commence on March 22 after the visitors will take part in a couple of practice matches.
