Devdutt Padikkal has further enhanced his reputation as one of the best batsmen in the domestic circuit with his string of sensational performances in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. The former India U19 star has been in red-hot form in India’s premier 50-over domestic tournament. In five games so far, his lowest score has been 52 while the highest one is 152.

On Monday (March 8), he registered his fourth consecutive century in the competition as he played a stunning knock of 101 against Kerala in the quarterfinal of the tournament. The southpaw started his campaign with a 52-run knock against Uttar Pradesh before missing his century by just three runs in the next outing against Bihar.

That failure to reach the century has been followed by four centuries in a row. The first of those four tons came against Odisha when he slammed 152. In his next outing, Padikkal played an unbeaten knock of 126 against Kerala. It was followed by yet another impressive knock as he scored 145 against Railways. His stunning display helped Karnataka top Group C and make it to the quarterfinal.

Fans call for Devdutt Padikkal’s inclusion in the Indian team

Devdutt Padikkal is making the most of his current form. In the ongoing quarterfinal clash against Kerala, he shared a mammoth stand of 249 with captain Samarth R before departing for 101. Samarth, on the other hand, went on to score 192, helping Karnataka pile up a mammoth total of 338 for 3. Padikkal’s knock came off 119 balls and was studded with 10 fours and 2 sixes.

His current form has now made the cricket experts and fans call for his inclusion in the Indian team. Padikkal is still waiting for his maiden call-up from the senior national team. The southpaw has been scoring heavily since the last season. In the 2019/20 season, he had finished as the top-scorer in Vijay Hazare Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, helping Karnataka win both the tournaments. It was followed by an impressive debut season in the IPL where he scored 473 runs in 15 games.

He is leading the run-scoring chart in the ongoing tournament too. In 6 games so far, he has scored 673 runs at a stunning average of 168.25. And as Padikkal continues to impress, the cricketing fraternity believes the time has come for the selectors to hand him a maiden call-up.
