Team India took a brave decision of dropping their regular number 3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara for the series opener against England at Edgbaston. They included KL Rahul at his expense in the line-up who has been in exceptional form in the limited-overs format. But the decision seems to have backfired on the visitors now as the new number 3 for them lasted only a couple of balls in the first innings.

After bowling out England early on the second day, the openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay started well for India. Both of them negated the new ball bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad. The partnership of 50 runs between the two had set the stage and there were talks of them posting a big total. However, Sam Curran had different ideas as he bowled a beautiful delivery to Vijay which nipped back in late and pinned him in front of the stumps.

Rahul plays a poor shot

The wicket had rejuvenated the hosts as KL Rahul walked into the middle with a hope to carry on the good job done by the openers. Curran ran in and pitched the ball up again which took the edge of the bat and ran to the boundary through the gap between the slips.

Curran didn’t lose hope and bowled a yorker length delivery next up. Rahul’s eyes lit up with the width and he tried to flirt with the ball and played on to his stumps. It was a shocking shot given the circumstances and the dejected look on his face was clearly visible. The move to drop Pujara was failed miserably and Rahul might have shelved one of the very few opportunities.

Twitter was all over him after scoring only 4 runs as they felt Pujara would’ve spent more time in the middle. But as it stands now, Rahul is in the dressing room and England are breathing fire with the ball.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Rahul’s failure:
