The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 16-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The selectors decided to rest the captain Virat Kohli looking at future tours and the amount of cricket to be played. He also survived an injury scare during the second Test match against England at Lord’s and deserved a rest ahead of an all-important Australia tour. However, another major exclusion from the team was of Suresh Raina who disappointed in the ODI series against England.

The left-hander was lucky to get an ODI call-up for the first time since December 2015 after Ambati Rayudu failed to clear the yo-yo test. He endured a decent T20I series against Ireland but the 50-overs leg of England tour didn’t go as planned for the southpaw. He batted in only a couple of matches during the three-game rubber and could only muster 47 runs at a poor strike-rate of 70.15.

Is Raina done and dusted?

For Suresh Raina, this was the last chance it seems ahead of the World Cup next year. Ambati Rayudu and Manish Pandey both are back in the side now after some consistent performances for India A in the quadrangular series. Even Kedar Jadhav has been recalled to the side as he proved his fitness. As far as Raina is concerned, it seems that his ODI career is done and dusted now.

He had a great chance to nail down one of the positions in the middle-order in England but he failed to do it. Though he cannot be ruled out entirely and a good domestic season might bring him back into the contention. As of now, he is not the part of the Asia Cup and will have to go through the grind yet again.

Twitterati was disappointed with his exclusion and felt bad for the left-hander who has immense experience of a whopping 226 ODIs.
