There was a lot of hype around Rohit Sharma ahead of the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. It was a stop-start career in the whites for the Indian white-ball vice-captain. He made his Test debut in November 2013. However, over six years, he played just 27 Test matches and was constantly in and out of the side.

In this Test, he opened the batting for the first time. Hence, the spotlight was firmly on the Mumbaikar and he didn’t disappoint. His ODI career was also resurrected when he started opening the batting and he has had an even better start to his Test career as an opener. In his first innings, he stroked a fine 176 as he helped India to post a huge total of 502.

In his 244-ball stay at the crease, Sharma hit 23 fours and six sixes as he shared a mammoth 317-run opening stand with Mayank Agarwal. After India eked out a 71-run lead, the new opener was at it once again as he led India’s charge in the second essay. He struck his second ton in the game, scoring 127 off 149 balls helping India force the pace on day four. Hence, he broke multiple records on his way to his twin centuries in his first Test as an opener.

Hence, the world is at his feet at the moment. He has received praise from all over the world. Gautam Gambhir also lauded the 32-year-old and praised him for his efforts. In fact, the former Delhi opener said that Rohit Sharma is not only the most dangerous batsman in the world but also the best.

However, the tweet didn’t go down well with the tweeps. They felt that it was an indirect dig at Indian skipper Virat Kohli. It is no secret that Gambhir doesn’t share a great camaraderie with Kohli. He has criticized Kohli on multiple occasions for different things. Gambhir has been very vocal about Kohli’s captaincy as well. Hence, Twitterati felt that he was taking a dig at Kohli. Hence, they didn’t hold their emotions back and let Gambhir know what they felt.

Here are some of the replies that Gambhir got after he sent out the Rohit Sharma tweet:
