What unfolded in the 7th match of the Champions Trophy at the Kennington Oval, London was a mere anti-climax. South Africa started off as favourites to dominate the match against a demoralised Pakistan side. As it turned out, even South Africans were shell-shocked looking at the performance of the men in green especially after their performance against the Indians.
After their performance on the 4th of June, not many would have given a chance to the Asian side. Many would have expected the Proteas to post over a target of 350 runs, with the likes of Du Plessis, Amla, and De Villiers posting daunting scores.
However, throughout the majority of the innings, it was the Pakistani bowlers who called the shots against one of the favourites to reach the semi-finals. South Africa needed just another win to reach the next stage after the convincing performance against the Sri Lankans.
Overall, it was a one-man show for South Africa as David Miller took his side to some sort of respectability by posting a target of 220 in front of Pakistan. Miller scored a crucial 71 in the process. Amla, du Plessis and de Kock were not able to convert their starts into something substantial as rest of the batsman struggled against the attack of the men in green.
For Pakistan, it was the spells from Hassan Ali and Imad Wasim which changed the game for their side and put to rest all the criticism they faced against the Indians. Hassan Ali ended up with three wickets in the eight overs he bowled and conceded only 24 runs whereas Imad Wasim conceded only 20 runs in the eight overs he bowled by picking up two crucial wickets.
Amongst those wickets were that of Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers which put them into backfoot. Wasim dismissed Mr. 360 in the first ball, thereby, scoring the first golden duck in his limited over career. The spell for Hassan Ali created a lot of buzz around the cricketing fraternity. From here on, it is Pakistan game’s to lose as they chase a target of 220
