Agarwal's 76-run knock on debut was enough for Kerry to realise that his statement was wrong.

Mayank Agarwal became the 295th cricketer for India in the whites today as he was handed over his international debut for the Boxing Day Test match. He stepped up to the task of facing the fiery Australian pacers in Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins and slammed a half-century in his maiden outing for the country. Agarwal went on to score 76 runs off 161 deliveries before Cummins strangled him down the leg-side.

But his knock kept India ahead in the game even as the middle-order capitalised and to end the day on a high at 215/2. However, while he was batting, the former Australian cricket Kerry O’Keefe who was commentating on-air insulted the debutant and also took an indirect dig over India’s first-class competition.

Questions Agarwals form in domestic cricket

Mayank Agarwal has done a lot of hard work to get into the national side. After consistent performances in the domestic circuit for a couple of years, the selectors had to finally pick him for the home series against Windies. His first-class average of close to 50 was the testament to his abilities and his highest score of 304* came against the Railways which is also a staggering achievement.

But while commentating, Kerry questioned Agarwal’s abilities calling the Railways’ bowlers as waiters. “Mayank Agarwal scored his triple century against Railways kitchen staff team,” O’Keefe said during the first day of the MCG Test which has created a lot of stir among the Indian fans now.

Having said that, the Indian opener let the bat do the talking and proved to the former Aussie player that he belongs to this level. He kept the famous Australian bowling attack at bay and thumped Nathan Lyon who is now tipped as the best spinner in the world. While Agarwal’s knock was enough for Kerry to know that his statement was wrong, the fans also let him know about the same by lashing out at him.
