The Test series between South Africa and Sri Lanka got underway on Thursday at the Kingsmead in Durban. The visitors opted to bowl first after winning the toss and managed to snaffle Dean Elgar for a duck thanks to Vishwa Fernando’s swing bowling. But they were denied a huge wicket of Hashim Amla in the same over with the umpire Aleem Dar miscalculating the time regarding the Decision Review System (DRS).

The incident happened in the second over of the innings of the opening day. Fernando had his tails up and bowled a beautiful delivery which came in through the air ever slightly to pin Amla in front of the stumps. A vociferous appeal followed but the umpire was unmoved to everyone’s surprise. Sri Lanka pondered a review after a brief discussion.

Does Dar miscalculate the time?

Dimuth Karunaratne signalled the ‘T’ soon enough for Aleem Dar to go for the third umpire but he walked away. According to the rules, the on-field umpire cautions the fielding side after 10 seconds are completed as they are supposed to take the review in less than 15 seconds. But nothing of that sorts was happened and the replays suggested that Amla would’ve been out if the review had been allowed.

What was even more shocking was, Aleem Dar didn’t even give Sri Lanka 15 seconds. According to Cricbuzz, their timer showed 13.79 seconds when Karnuaratne had signalled ‘T’ to the umpire and it remains to be seen if the umpire will be questioned over the same now.

Having said that, Sri Lanka nipped Amla in the next few overs as the veteran batsman struggled completely during his stay at the crease. He was dismissed by Suranga Lakmal on just three runs as Kusal Mendis plucked a good low catch which also went upstairs with the umpires giving the soft signal as ‘not-out’. But the replays this time again were conclusive and Amla had to walk back.

Meanwhile, Twitterati was left fuming with the umpire Aleem Dar who favoured Amla and didn’t allow a much-deserved wicket to the visiting Islanders.
