India kicked off their final leg of the preparation for the ICC World Cup on Sunday when they took on Australia in the first T20I in Vishakhapatnam. The two-T20Is and five ODIs that follow will see players making or missing it as far as the upcoming WC is concerned. However, the Indian batting did not impress in the first match even after having a good start.

Australian skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and sent the hosts into bat and though opener Rohit Sharma fell cheaply to Jason Behrendorff, his partner KL Rahul (44) and captain Virat Kohli (24) put up a solid 55-run partnership for the second wicket. Once the latter departed off Adam Zampa, India saw a slump and were in the danger of getting all out without playing their full quota of 20 overs before MS Dhoni made sure they post 126 runs on the board.

The batsmen showed little application as India lost the next 5 wickets for just 40 runs and one of the culprits was Rishabh Pant who has come under scanner in the recent times for his exploits in Test cricket.

Pant let the team down when it was needed

Rishabh Pant was expected to continue from where Kohli left but got himself run out after scoring just three off five deliveries. Off the bowling of spinner D’Arcy Short, the left-hand batsman skipped down the track and flayed his bat at the wide delivery but erred in not waiting for it to go past the fielder. Behrendorff made a brilliant work in picking the ball and throwing it back to wicket-keeper Peter Handscomb who ran Pant out.

The 21-year-old wicket-keeper-batsman who is playing the game only as a specialist batter is yet to show his Test mettle in the limited-over formats and has also been criticised over his shot selection. Recently in New Zealand, he was seen being mentored by MS Dhoni during a T20I match but it seems the youngster is yet to polish his temperament when it comes to batting in the shorter formats of the game.

Pant faced the flak on Twitter after throwing his wicket away with a run-out and left his team reeling in the middle-overs when needed the most.
