Pakistan and Bangladesh are currently battling it out in Abu Dhabi in a virtual semi-final of the Asia Cup in order to set the finals date with India a couple of days later. The latter side opted to bat first after winning the toss but were soon reduced to 12/3 thanks to the returning Junaid Khan and Shaheen Afridi. Bangladesh continued to struggle at the top of the order as they were sent back with literally nothing on the board only for Sarfraz Ahmed to let them off the hook.

However, just like the tournament opener, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun joined hands to rebuild the team’s situation and are looking very good now. They have stitched a partnership of more than 130 runs and have notched up their respective half-centuries. Not that their knocks have been chanceless but Sarfraz Ahmed’s captaincy has been extremely poor.

He altered the field placements unnecessarily and removing the slip was one of the biggest mistakes from him as Hasan Ali managed to create a chance twice in his spell and on both the occasions there was no fielder at the position.

Commentators critical of Pakistan skipper

Even the commentators like Ramiz Raja and Sunil Gavaskar were critical of his field settings as they opined that easy singles were given to the duo when they were new to the crease. Also, the attacking mindset was curbed for no reason which allowed Rahim and Mithun to settle. To add to their agony, Sarfraz Ahmed also wasted a review when the latter was given not-out by the umpire and Pakistan’s backs are against the wall now.

With more than more than 15 overs to go now, Bangladesh are looking good to score more than 250 runs easily on a pitch which gets slower in the evening. It will be interesting to see if the Men in Green will be able to pull things back in the death overs by picking wickets.
