New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum raced away to a blistering century in his swansong Test match. Batting on trying conditions at Christchurch, McCullum walked into bat with his side in trouble at 4-74. However, the 34-year-old rolled back the years as he launched an all-out attack on the Australian pace attack.
As McCullum began smashing away, he reminded the Christchurch crowd of why they regarded him as the most destructive player of all time. He smashed the likes of Hazelwood, Bird and the returning Pattinson to all parts. Aussie skipper Steve Smith was left with no other option as he brought back Mitchell Marsh and Nathan Lyon back into the attack. McCullum smashed Marsh and Lyon for four sixes. Even Smith himself had no idea as he took stock of his decimated attack.
Left-hander Corey Anderson too joined his skipper as he unleashed a barrage of fours and sixes. Vice-captain Kane Williamson had fallen in the 26th over with the scorecard reading 4-74. However, when McCullum was dismissed for 145, the scorecard read 253-5 in 45 overs. This unprecedented surge in the run-rate left the visitors shell-shocked. Corey Anderson compiled a blistering 78 with 8 fours and 6 sixes. Not known to be a particularly big hitter, BJ Watling too joined McCullum and Anderson as he blasted his way to a quickfire 58. The New Zealand innings closed on 370 in 65.4 overs at a massive run rate of 5.63.
Social media handle Twitter blew up with many voicing their joy as well as congratulations following McCullum’s brilliant performance. Here are some of the best Twitter Reactions following McCullum’s 79 ball 145.
