The Tshwane Spartans stunned the Paarl Rocks with a splendid effort in the 19th game of MSL 2019. Firstly, the bowlers did a fabulous job to bowl out the visitors for a low score. Then, AB de Villiers unleashed his best and turned the clock back with an excellent knock. As a result, the Spartans won the game comprehensively. For his bowling efforts, Roelof van der Merwe was adjudged the ‘Man of the Match’.

After they were asked to bat first, Henry Davids and Cameron Delport took the Paarl Rocks off to an aggressive start. While the former scored 14 off 9 balls, the latter raced his way to 25 off 12 balls. But they couldn’t carry on for long and things really slowed down after they fell. Faf du Plessis couldn’t find his rhythm and got out after scoring 19 runs from 21 balls.

With the other batsmen also failing to get big runs, the team was bowled out cheaply for 126 runs in 19.4 overs. Other than Cameron Delport, no one else managed to get past the 20-run mark. Roelof van der Merwe picked up 3 wickets and conceded 15 runs in his four overs.

There is nothing you can go as an opposition when AB de Villiers plays that way

The Tshwane Spartans got off to a rather jittery starts. Theunis de Bruyn was dismissed by Bjorn Fortuin for 5 runs. However, his partner Dean Elgar decided to play a gritty, Test kind-of knock. Even though he wasn’t getting any runs, he managed to feed off AB de Villiers’ exploits at the other end. After struggling for 25 deliveries, Elgar was bowled by Hardus Viljoen on the 26th ball that he faced. He only scored 12 runs and didn’t hit a single boundary.

AB de Villiers, however, didn’t let this knock impact him. The 35-year-old smashed the bowlers to all corners of the park and finished with an unbeaten 37-ball 69. His knock included six fours and three sixes. With the help of Heinrich Klaasen (36 off 20 balls) at the other end, he managed to help the Spartans complete the chase in 15 overs and with 8 wickets in hand. The triumph also helped the Spartans get a bonus point and move to the top of the points table.
