For a change, Sri Lanka did produce a fight back, something we hadn’t witnessed before this in the series. However, the result was all the same. The Sri Lankan batters did a splendid job in the second innings. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis both produced magnificent centuries as Sri Lanka put up a 191-run partnership for the second wicket.

While Malinda Pushpakumara and skipper Dinesh Chandimal were dismissed cheaply, Karunaratne continued to bat his heart out. Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella chipped in with crucial contributions. However, they failed to prolong their stay in the middle. Once Karunaratne was gone, it was only a matter of time before India nailed the last nail in the coffin.

The Indian spinners were stupendous today. If it was Ravichandran Ashwin’s five wicket haul in the first innings, it was Ravindra Jadeja in the second as he picked up an important fifer to set the game up for India. Ashwin got a couple of wickets and even Hardik Pandya stepped up with the ball as he got the wickets of Mendis and Dickwella.

The Sri Lankan team was all out for 386 runs as India went on to win the second Test by an innings and 53 runs. This victory also sealed the series in favour of the visitors as they now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test match series. Ravindra Jadeja was deservingly awarded the Man of the Match for a half century and 7 wickets in the game.

The action now shifts to Pallekele for the final Test. Sri Lanka would be looking to make amends and make the series 1-2 to avoid the whitewash.
