The London Spirit, slowly, but steadily, are starting to revive their campaign in the ongoing Women’s Hundred. On Tuesday, August 10, the Heather Knight-led unit beat the Manchester Originals by five wickets at Old Trafford. Deepti Sharma’s calm and composed knock took them over the line in a tensed run-chase. For the Originals, their campaign in the tournament ended with defeat.
Lamb, Du Preez, Ecclestone shine for Originals
After electing to bat first, the Originals started well courtesy of a 30-run stand off 24 balls between Lizelle Lee and Emma Lamb. However, Lee failed to open her account in seven balls and was castled by Deepti. Lamb looked ominous for her 30-ball 39 before she was run out halfway through the innings. Knight piled on more misery for them as she trapped Cordelia Griffith plumb in front.
Mignon du Preez played a handy 27-ball knock of 31 with five fours before she became Deepti’s second victim. Thereafter, it was Sophie Ecclestone’s 32-run cameo that helped the Originals post 127 on the board. Deepti was the standout bowler, not only because she got two wickets, but also as he gave 10 runs at 0.50. Charlotte Dean and Sophie Munro were a tad on the expensive side.
Sharma shines with the bat
The Spirit had a forgettable start as Kate Cross got rid of opener Tammy Beaumont, who bagged a golden duck. Naomi Dattani scored 11, but at a strike rate of 68.75 before getting out to Alex Hartley. However, Knight and Deandra Dottin injected momentum into the innings with a 53-run stand off 38 balls. However, to the Spirit’s dismay, both of them perished with a space of two balls.
Even as Knight scored 35, Dottin managed 28. Danielle Gibson perished to Hartley, leaving the Spirit in more trouble. With the required rate climbing, Deepti didn’t lose her cool. The left-hander stayed unbeaten on 34 off 23 with three fours and helped the Spirit chase the target down with two balls left. Dean finished the innings off with a boundary on the on-side off fast bowler Natalie Brown.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to London Spirit’s win:

Single-double ke saath saath, 3 boundary bhi maar diya aaj! Superb knock that from Deepti Sharma. Kept her calm when it would have been far too easy to lose her head.
There’s the ability to finish games. Now to transfer that to the top level. #TheHundred

Deepti Sharma perform brilliantly today against Manchester Original in The Hundred.
First She took 2/10 , then from his bat Deepti not out on 34*(23) to help his team for victory. She Declared Man of the match. Well Done Deepti. #DeeptiSharma #TheHundred pic.twitter.com/ZTRyMy8ODf— Surinder (@navsurani) August 10, 2021
Great batting from Player of the Match Deepti Sharma, but don't underestimate the excellent contribution from Charlie Dean. She is one for the future!
