The thrill quotient in this year Caribbean Premier League is quite high as no match is being pardoned from a thrilling finish. Tuesday’s (Windian time) match also went right down the wire and resulted in the sixth defeat on the trot for Darren Sammy and his ‘stars’, who are yet to shine in the tournament. As far as the neutrals are concerned, they witnessed an adrenaline wrenching game at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia between St Lucia Stars and Jamaica Tallawahs.
The man whose name the stadium bares looked desolate after the match as his side came so close to a victory once again, but it somehow slipped from their hands for the sixth time. Winning the toss, Sammy went back to his usual bowling first decision. For a change, the Stars put up a good fight in the match, courtesy a classy knock of 83 from Andre Fletcher.
Though Pakistani veteran Mohammad Sami struck twice early in the game, another war veteran Marlon Samuels was there to steady the ship. Both Samuels and Fletcher was not looking in a mood to go slow and fireworks started quite untimely at the Gros Islet. After Samuels’ dismissal, skipper Sammy and Kyle Mayers couldn’t contribute much. But Fletcher dug deep at one end and was unwilling to throw his wicket away.
Kiwi cricketer Jesse Ryder fancied some shots towards the fag end of the innings as the Stars managed to cross the 170-run mark. Chasing 174, opener Glenn Phillips and Lendl Simmons provided a strong foundation to the innings. But the complexion of the game changed after their dismissal. Tallawahs lost 4 wickets in a span of 40 runs and at the thirteenth over, they were struggling at 93/4.
Jonathan Foo tried to play his part but all he could salvage was 22 runs before he was undone by another Kiwi McClenaghan. With 40 runs needed from 17 balls, Tallawahs needed some one to step up. Andre McCarthy was already settled, all he needed was someone who would be able to continue the runs flow. His wish was fulfilled by Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim as Sammy witnessed how his empire collapsed again.
Patel McClenaghan and Mayers all went for a toss as McCarthy and Wasim knew nothing except boundaries. While McCarthy scored 61 runs from just 37 balls, Wasim played a quick fire 18 from 9 balls knock, which eventually won the game for Jamaica. After this match, Jamaica are placed 3rd in the table, with 3 wins out of 4. If you are a Stars fan, better keep your eyes away from the points table. Twitterati followed their usual job and congratulated the Tallawahs on the spectacular victory. Trolling was also served on the platter for Sammy’s men, as they are in dire need of some motivation now.
