The third game of the Women’s World Cup saw Australia take on arch-rivals England at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. As it is usually expected from the two teams, the game was well fought till its conclusion with Australia coming out victorious and thus opening their account in the tournament with a win.

Having won the toss, England opted to field first. The Australians got off to a decent start before losing their star opener, Alyssa Healy for 28. However, the other opener in Rachael Haynes was in total control of her game and stitched together a mammoth 196 runs partnership with her captain, Meg Lanning. Haynes was stellar in her stroke play on her way to a brilliant century.

Lanning, on the other hand, played the perfect foil to the opening batter by scoring 86 off 110 balls. There was a lengthy phase in the Australian innings where England just did not look like breaking through until Lanning fell in the 43rd over. Haynes, however, continued on her merry way scoring 130 off 131 balls before being dismissed. Her innings constituted 14 fours and a six. Australia ended their innings with a daunting total of 310-3.

Natalie Sciver’s counter-attacking knock gave England the advantage at one point

In the pursuit of registering their first win of the mega event, England did not get off to the best of starts losing their opener Winfield Hill for a duck. However, a fine 74-run knock by the other opener Tammy Beaumont kept her side in the hunt. However, the star of the game for England was middle-order batter Natalie Sciver, who at one point looked set to get her team home.

The right-handed batter scored a brilliant counter-attacking century tilting the advantage in England’s favour for a brief period. Her innings was highlighted with 13 fours. However, even though she stayed not out with 109 runs in 85 balls, the target proved to be a bit too much for the defending champions with them losing the game by 12 runs in the end.
