It took a superhuman effort from Ben Stokes to help England win the third Test and level the series. However, no such miracle was possible in the fourth Test. Courtesy efforts from Pat Cummins and the other bowlers, Australia comfortably hopped over the line. With this, the Kangaroos also managed to retain the Ashes as they have already taken a 2-1 lead and there is no chance of England winning the series from here on.
To start the day off, Pat Cummins provided Australia with an ideal start. He dismissed Jason Roy for 31 runs and the 29-year-old failed to make an impact yet again. Then, the Australian vice-captain also got the better of the dangerous Ben Stokes who was caught behind the stumps after scoring 1 run. Mitchell Starc then took over and dismissed wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow for 25 runs. With this wicket, Australia ensured that he had a firm grip over the proceedings.

While a loss seemed inevitable for England, Jos Buttler offered great resistance in the company of Craig Overton. This pair, however, still had to survive the final session of play. While the English fans were hoping for a miracle from Jos Buttler this time around, it wasn’t to be it. After playing some extremely gritty cricket, the 29-year-old threw the towel in. This was indeed the killer blow as Australia wrote their name all over this game after this.
Buttler, who was possibly expecting a shorter delivery, decided not to offer any shot. Josh Hazlewood, however, pitched it fuller and the ball nipped back just enough to kiss the off-stump dismissing him for 34 runs. Towards the end, Jack Leech and Craig Overton offered some amazing resistance and put up a terrific fightback. They only had to survive the final hour of play to draw the game. But Leech was dismissed by Marnus Labuschagne after he scored 12 off 51 balls.
At last, Craig Overton was dismissed after he faced 105 deliveries. England was bowled out for 197 runs and lost the game by 185 runs. The fans were thrilled after Australia’s victory. They attributed this victory to Steve Smith for his efforts in both the innings of the game. Also, Pat Cummins and the other bowlers were commended for their efforts with the ball.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:
A word on Tim Paine then. Has been called stopgap captain, non-playing captain, DRS waster, toss only captain etc. over and over again.
Hasn’t been up to the mark with the bat for a long time.
Yet he has managed to ensure his side retain the Ashes on Eng soil.

It’s amazing how similar Steve Smith and Don Bradman techniques are.. both played back. Both had split grips. Both had two eyed stance at ball release. Both unique. But we don’t coach these traits.

5 day Tests, away teams winning Test series, (good) bowlers on top – it’s almost as though you can leave the game to its own devices & it all sorts itself out in the end! ????

Congrats Australia on retaining the #Ashes19. For me one man was the difference between the sides who both struggled to score enough runs. Steve Smith has been incredible! Hopefully @englandcricket can kick back at the Oval to tie the series

Credit must go to Paine & Langer for their strong leadership, the courage and skill from Cummins & Co and the unmatched appetite by Smith. #ashes #retained

Remember when Pat Cummins was the broken fast bowler of Australian cricket. He has graduated to being the constant in their fast-bowling ranks in an impressive “ASHES” campaign.
