The first One Day International between Australia and New Zealand kicked off at Sydney as the hosts went on to win the game by 68 runs. Earlier in the day, it was captain Steve Smith who won the toss as the Aussies elected to bat first.
Matt Henry struck in the first over as Finch got out for a golden duck. As Smith batted on, he kept running out of partners. While David Warner and George Bailey managed to get starts, they failed to hang in for a longer duration. Marsh met with a run out as the ball deflected Neesham’s fingers onto the stumps at the non striker’s end.
At 92/4, Travis Head walked in and compiled a brilliant half century. Steve Smith who was looking magnificent from the start went on to smash an astounding hundred as he scored 164 runs from 157 deliveries. After Head lost his wicket, Smith and Matthew Wade 38 (22) portrayed a splendid display of pinch hitting as they guided the Australian total beyond 300.
At the end of it all, Australia reached a total of 324/8 in 50 overs, which was well above par. Trent Boult was the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis as he got a couple of wickets. Henry and Neesham also got a couple of wickets but they were quite expensive.
Coming out to bat, the visitors weren’t off to the best of the starts as Josh Hazelwood sent back both Tom Latham and Kane Williamson inside the powerplay overs. Martin Guptill, on the other hand, continued to play freely with some mind-boggling hitting. He went on to score an outstanding knock of 114 runs from just 102 deliveries, comprising ten boundaries and six maximums.
On the other hand, Neesham hanged on for a while before skying up one off Mitchell Starc. However, the Kiwis kept losing wickets at regular intervals. By the time Guptill got out, there was still too much to do for New Zealand. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh cleared the tail as the visitors were bundled for 256 runs.
Josh Hazlewood led the Aussie bowling lineup with 3 crucial wickets. Smith was deservingly awarded the player of the match for a spectacular captain’s knock. With that win, Australia rose up a notch above the Kiwis to lead the series 1-0.
Twitter enjoyed their Sunday with a thrilling encounter between the Aussies and New Zealanders that saw some amazing hundreds by individuals from both teams. Marsh got trolled and so did Bailey for his stance.
Here are some of the funniest, statistical and detail filled tweets that took place during the course of the game:

Great work from Ferguson to react to the prospect of having to bowl a free hit by going down with cramp. #AUSvNZ
