Ireland’s last fixture scheduled against Australia turned out to be another one-sided encounter as the Poms won by 9 wickets. Earlier in the day, Porterfield won his second toss on the trot as Ireland elected to bat first.
Ireland had a good start. While the likes of Porterfield, Stirling and Anderson got starts, they failed to convert them into big ones. At 121/2, things seemed to be going fine for the Irish. What followed was a string of wickets due to which the momentum swing in the favour of the Aussies.
Wickets kept falling at regular interval even as the experienced Kevin O’Brien got out for 23. The Ireland batsmen failed to bat 50 overs as they got all out for 198 with more than 6 overs to spare.
The Australian bowlers did a wonderful job on the field. Zampa was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets in his bag. Hastings and Boland got a couple of wickets. Marsh and debutant Worrall also managed to pick one wicket each.
On the other hand, the openers gave a splendid kickstart to the Australian innings. Warner got out scoring a quickfire 48 off 30 balls as he was caught and bowled by Murtagh. Usman Khawaja smashed a wonderful innings of 82 not out.
He along with Smith who also scored a superb fifty took Australia ashore as they went on to chase the target with the loss of just one wicket. While Kevin O’Brien and Murtagh managed to gain some control, the rest of the bowlers were swayed round the park by the Aussie batsmen. Khawaja was deservingly declared the man of the match.
Twitter took great interest as the associate nation showed great valour and fight even though the result was quite obvious. Many were of the opinion that Ireland need to play more matches to get competitive. Zampa and Khawaja were lauded for their scintillating performances.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:
