The second ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, 2016 started off on a positive note for New Zealand as skipper Kane Williamson decided to bowl first. They were probably looking to chase here, his Australian counterpart Steve Smith wasn’t really concerned on being asked to bat first. As David Warner and Aaron Finch walked out to open the innings the intentions were clear. This being another belter Australia wanted to post a huge total and bat the visitors out of the competition.

None of the New Zealand frontline bowlers could get a wicket and after a good start Finch fell to the left-arm spin of Mitchell Santner. Warner at the other end was determined to play a big knock. He had skipper Smith for company and they took time to develop the inning towards something big. A 145-run partnership for the 3rd wicket guaranteed them a par total.

Warner scored a magnificent century (119) while Smith hit a fifty (72). The next two men who followed them were absolutely mind blowing. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh played some explosive shots and were severe at the New Zealand bowlers. Figures of 10-0-91-0 for Matt Henry and 10-0-80-1 for Trent Boult were evident of the fact that it was a dreadful day out for the bowlers.

Marsh was unbeaten at the end on 79 from 40 while Head departed after plundering 57 off 32 balls. The duo took the team total to 378/5 in 50 overs which was well beyond the par total despite the surface favoring the batters.

New Zealand in their reply were dealt an early blow as Josh Hazlewood dismissed Tom Latham for 4. Martin Guptill also carried his form from the SCG and was playing really well but five short of his fifty Pat Cummins had him caught behind. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson and allrounder Jimmy Neesham both scored half centuries but they were too slow considering the asking rate was well over 10 for most part of the chase. Williamson took 148 balls for his 81 while Neesham scored 74 from 93.

Once they were dismissed there was nothing left in the chase and Australia bowled them out for 262 in 47.2 overs. Here is how Twitter reacted right through the game:
