Twitter Reactions: Bangladesh bundled up for 103 as West Indies dominate on first day

An entertaining first day at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua saw as many as 12 wickets falling between West Indies and Bangladesh in the first of the two-match Test series. Both sides stacked their playing XI with strong fast bowlers and the home side produced a dominating performance with both bat and ball at the end of day one.

West Indies opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the decision worked splendidly with three of the top four batters getting dismissed for a duck in the Bangladesh batting line-up. Tamim Iqbal started off positively, however, his stay at the crease was short-lived for a 43-ball 29 that included four boundaries. In-form batter Liton Das was removed for 12 while the re-appointed skipper Shakib Al Hasan came in at number six.

Wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan was another batter who was dismissed for a duck while Shakib and Mehidy Hasan tried to stitch a partnership for the seventh wicket. Shakib kept finding boundaries from one end and bailed out his side from an embarrassing total as Bangladesh were stuttering at 45 for 6 at one stage. Mehidy scored just two runs, having faced 22 deliveries, and Jayden Seales managed to dismiss him to end the partnership that looked like rescuing the visitors.

Shakib Al Hasan reaches a valiant half-century

Mustafizur Rahman could last just four balls without troubling the scorers while the onus was on Shakib to get some quick runs for the team. The left-hander reached his half-century with a small partnership alongside Ebadot Hossain, however, Alzarri Joseph managed to get rid of Shakib after a 67-ball 51. It was just a formality for the West Indies bowlers as Bangladesh were all out for 103 in their first innings in 32.5 overs.

Jayden Seales and Joseph picked up three wickets each for West Indies, while Kemar Roach and Kyle Mayers picked up the remaining four wickets. The home side in reply was quite happy to take their time and saw the new ball spell from Mustafizur and Khaled Ahmed without losing a wicket. John Campbell scored a 72-ball 24 until Mustafizur got through his defences in the 26th over.

The next wicket to fall was Raymon Reifer (11 off 26), with the West Indies nearing the total posted by Bangladesh. Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite held one side together with a gritty knock of an unbeaten 42 and he is expected to be the key batter for the hosts on the second day as West Indies trail by just eight runs.
