The Bangladesh women’s cricket team has scripted history by posting their first-ever win in the Women’s World Cup. In a humdinger of a contest against the Pakistan side at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, the Nigar Sultana-led outfit won the match by nine runs.
The Pakistan Women were set a target of 235 for victory, but could only manage a total of 225/9 in their allotted 50 overs. In fact, after a superb 91-run opening stand between openers Nahida Khan and Sidra Ameen, the Pakistan batting line-up fell apart and never recovered after that.
Apart from Nahida (43 runs) and Ameen (104 runs), no other Pakistan batter stood up. In fact, as many as six Pakistan batters could not even score in double figures. Fahima Khatun was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with the ball. She scalped a three-wicket haul, and also leaked only 38 runs in the eight overs that she bowled. Apart from Khatun, Rumana Ahmed also scalped two wickets as well to put the brakes on the opposition batting lineup.
Fargana Hoque’s 71 took Bangladesh to respectable total
For Bangladesh, Fargana Hoque held the innings together with a superb 115-ball 71 with the willow in hand. She walked in to bat with the Bangladesh scorecard reading 37/1 and almost stayed till the end to ensure that Bangladesh posted a decent total on the board. Hoque struck five boundaries in her stay out in the middle.
Apart from Hoque, the likes of Sharmin Akhter and skipper Nigar Sultana chipped in with 44 and 46 respectively as well. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu was outstanding with the ball. In the 10 overs that she bowled, the left-arm spinner prized out three batters and leaked only 41 runs as well. Apart from Sandhu, the likes of Fatima Sana, Nida Dar, and Omaima Sohail chipped in with a wicket each for the Pakistan with the ball in hand.
