Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and to surprise many chose to bat first, after what happened to the Pakistan batsmen yesterday it didn’t look the wisest move. But the pitch bore a different look, though there was live grass but was rolled off and it looked a good one to bat on and a wicket that would go on to assist the spinners. Bangladesh were ordinary at the start of their innings but it was Sabbir Rahman’s day.

While others struggled to get bat to ball and time it, he came out all guns blazing and thrashed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. The Bangladesh fans in presence were given a treat by his attacking strokeplay. Sabbir soon got to his half-ton in 38 balls and played a wonderful knock worth 80 after both their openers departed for ducks. Shakib Al Hasan played the second fiddle till he was there at the crease and switched to the attacking mode after Sabbir’s dismissal, Mahmudullah’s 23 off 12 once again gave Bangladesh a good finish and they ended with 147.

150 was called a par total on this wicket and the tigers finished really close to it. Sri Lanka had a better start as both openers Dinesh Chandimal and Tillakaratne Dilshan started cautiously and took calculated risk. Dilshan didn’t look comfortable; Shakib who was introduced in the 4th over got Bangladesh the breakthrough. But thereafter Chandimal and Shehan Jayasuriya put on a 50 plus partnership and Sri Lanka looked in command of the chase.

The wickets of Chandimal and Jayasuriya completely changed the complexion of the match and then on there was hardly any moment the Lankan’s owned. The mounting required rate resulted in regular wickets and in the end Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 23 runs for the first time in T20I cricket.
