It was a match of two heavy-weights in the fifth game of the Carribean Premier League 2017. Kumar Sangakkara’s Jamaica Tallawahs locked horns with Kieron Pollard’s Barbados Tridents. Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch which had something constant for the bowlers to attack on against a batting-heavy Barbados line-up.

Jamaica did not get off to the start that they would have expected to, with skipper Sangakkara falling early in the second over of the innings, with Lendl Simmons holding ground on the other end. Andre McCarthy and Simmons formed a solid partnership, leading the Tallawahs to a total of 65 runs in the first ten overs before Simmons was dismissed by the left-arm seam of Wahab Riaz.

Wahab Riaz further continued to breathe fire in the very same over with the wicket of fellow countryman Imad Wasim the very next ball, and Rovman Powell’s stumps going for a walk in the very same over. At 65/4, the home side was struggling to match up with the bowling of the left-arm seamer. Shakib Al Hasan joined the in-form McCarthy at the middle, and both of them struck a chord from ball one, leading the Tallawahas to a respectable total of 154 for the loss of five wickets.

The reply

In reply, the Tridents got off to a similar start to the Tallawahas with the Kiwi batsman Kane Williamson getting dismissed in the second over failing to read Imad Wasim’s arm ball. Dwayne Smith and Shoaib Malik had the task of rebuilding the innings, which fell short when Malik was caught short of his crease for just eight runs with the scoreboard reading 23/2. At the mid-junction of their 20 overs, the Tridents struggled at 48/3, with Dwayne Smith throwing his wicket to make it 51/4 before Nicholas Pooran got out to make it 52/5.

The ever-so-strong batting line-up of the Tridents faced a massive hit, and the hope lied in the willow of their skipper Kieron Pollard who tried to weave his magic to lead his team home with a knock of 62, in just 33 deliveries with six sixes. The Tridents fell short of the total by 12 runs to give a much-needed victory to the Tallawahs. This win had both the teams tied at the third and fourth place, with a win each.
