In front of the 20,000 odd crowd and an estimated 12,000 English supporters in Cape Town, all-rounder Ben Stokes took the attack to South Africa on day two of the 2nd Test and got England to a highly commanding position at Lunch.
Stokes impressed everyone and displayed a fine piece of batting master class. He converted his overnight score of 73 into the second fastest double century in Test Cricket before Lunch on day 2. He batted with utmost ease to reach 200 runs in just 163 balls. Stokes wasn’t totally conservative and showed aggression whenever he got the opportunity to do so. There were two different phases of his double century. The first one was when he was fresh at the crease batting with Joe Root and the other was when he came out to bat today.
Ben Stokes came into bat with Joe Root after James Taylor was dismissed for a golden duck. Initially, he was happy with the anchors role as Root batted with confidence. The occasional boundaries from his bat kept coming though and he reached his half-century in 70 balls.
The morning session of the day 2 witnessed an all out aggression from Stokes and his batting partner Jonny Bairstow. The pair scored at over 8 runs per over and smothered the Proteas attack. Together they contributed 290 runs and are still unbeaten. Amidst all this, Stokes also became the 20th batsman to score 100 runs before the lunch session. When the two teams walked back for lunch, Stokes was batting on 204* while Bairstow was just five runs short of his century.
