The ongoing second Test match between West Indies and England looks pretty poised at the end of Day 2, though the former team has a lot of work to do. Riding on centuries from Ben Stokes and skipper Joe Root, the Three Lions declared at 507/9 while batting first at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. In reply, West Indies were 71/1 at stumps, still trailing by 436 runs.
Earlier in the day, England resumed at their overnight score of 244/3 with centurion Root and Stokes being in the middle. The duo batted brilliantly as West Indies bowlers had another hard day at the office. Continuing his stellar run in whites, Root even breached the 150-run mark but fell prey to Kemar Roach after scoring 153.
Ben Stokes was at his destructive best
Stokes, on the other hand, was going strong as he shared significant partnerships with the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes. While none of the two could play big knocks, they provided substantial support to the southpaw. Meanwhile, Stokes shifted gears after getting settled and played some delightful shots all over the park.
He brought up his ton off just 114 balls and ended up scoring 120 off 128 deliveries. A 57-ball 41 from Chris Woakes meant the visitors breached the 500-run mark. The declaration eventually came at the score of 507/9. Veerasammy Permaul was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, having scalped three wickets.
In reply, the hosts got off to a dismal start, losing opener John Campbell in the second over. He fell prey to debutant pacer Matthew Fisher, who took a wicket off his very second ball in Test cricket. Nonetheless, skipper Kraigg Brathwaite joined forces with Shamarh Brooks and the duo made sure no further damage was done till stumps.
As mentioned above, the home team ended the day at 71/1. While they would be pretty pleased with the start, they have a lot of work to do. On the other hand, England bowlers would aim to make the ball talk to further tighten their side’s grip over the match.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to the day’s proceedings:
