In the final ODI of the three-match ODI series, New Zealand bowlers stopped Windies for a mere 99 runs when rain cut short the game to just 23 overs a side. It started to pour down after the completion of the 19th over as Windies had picked up 3 early wickets and looked in a good position. Although Ross Taylor and Tom Latham had provided New Zealand the stability with an unbeaten 57-run stand.
Earlier, after winning the toss, Latham opted to bat first. West Indies had Chris Gayle back in the side and he replaced Evin Lewis. Their quick bowlers had New Zealand under pressure during the first 10 overs as the scorecard read 42 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.
Rain cut short the game to 23 overs
Skipper Latham and Taylor’s 57-run partnership helped them get out of jolts of the early blows and the game looked well in control before the rain decided to play the spoiler. After the regular showers, the game was cut short to 23 overs for each side. The Kiwis had already played 19 overs with Taylor and Latham looking in good touch.
With just 4 overs to play after the rain interval, Latham opted to be the aggressive one of the two first as he smashed three boundaries off Ashley Nurse in the first over after resumption. Henry Nicholas’s 9-ball 18 helped them post 131 runs in 23 overs. DLS came into the picture and the West Indies had to chase down 166 runs in their 23 overs.
The run chase
West Indies needed a solid and quick-fire start from Chris Gayle but he failed to create an impact as the left-hander’s return was cut short in the first over itself bowled by Matt Henry. Trent Boult who had run through the Windies batting lineup in the 2nd ODI continued his form as he made Shai Hope his first victim in his first over.
The run chase was derailed completely when Trent Boult picked up two more in his second over of the game leaving the visitors reeling at 9 for the loss of 5 wickets after 4 overs. Spinners Mitchell Santner and Todd Astle chipped in with wickets as well. Skipper Jason Holder tried to show some resistance with a quick-fire 34 runs off 21 deliveries but he was running out of partners at the other end that caused him to lose his wickets trying to score quickly.
The last wicket pair added 26 runs but eventually fell and they were 66 runs short of the target.
