Sydney Thunders who started their campaign with a win against Sydney Sixers in the first game of the BBL were up against Adelaide Strikers in their second encounter while the Strikers were opening their campaign in the seventh edition of the tournament.
It was Strikers bowlers who rattled the batting line-up of the Thunders as they start their campaign on a winning note. Skipper Travis Head after winning the toss opted to bat first. New Zealand quick bowler McClenaghan struck in his first over as he wrapped opener Weatherald after he went for 4 on the earlier ball.
Carey and Head on the charge
Alex Carey took on the spinner Chris Green when he smacked him for 2 boundaries. The next two overs from the Thunders saw their bowlers getting whacked for six boundaries as both Head and Carey started to attack. They brought Strikers fifty in the 6th over of the game and Strikers were looking good for a huge total. Carey hit 2 sixes on the first ball of the next two overs of the spinners while Head got out to Arjun Nair after hitting him for a maximum.
Spinners tie the Strikers
Thunders spinners who were instrumental in their first win once again didn’t give too much away in this game as well. Tight bowling from the trio of Nair, Green and Fawad Ahmed put a lot of pressure on the Strikers in the middle overs.
Nair gave runs at 9 runs per over in his 4 but he picked up 3 wickets it was Green and Ahmed’s 8 overs from the other end which helped Nair grab those wickets as the two’s combined 8 overs cost just 47 runs. With small contribution from Lehmann and Wells helped the Strikers go past 150 and they eventually set 164 runs for Thunders to chase.
The chase
Jos Buttler who couldn’t open his account in the last game against Sixers started the inning with 2 consecutive boundaries. But he couldn’t continue the same as he got out in the third over of the innings for 10 runs to his name off 9 deliveries.
Watson and Paterson were getting in for what looked like a good partnership for the Thunders but Watson’s counterpart Head sent him packing when he couldn’t middle the slow sweep and holed out in the deep. Two wickets in the over from Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan made the run chase look like a mountain for the Thunders as he sent back Gibson and Rhorer in three balls.
Ben Laughlin returned and made the matter worse for the Thunders as he picked up 3 wickets in 4 balls of his second over. He accounted for Blizard, Green and McClenaghan. Lone resistance from Arun Nair didn’t last long as Laughlin picked up the last wicket of Fekete to finish the innings for 110 runs.
