Last night Brendon McCullum played a captain’s knock as Trinbago Knight Riders won with 7 wickets in hand. Trinbago chased down Guyana Amazon Warriors’ total with relative ease to consolidate their position at the top of the standings. This heavy defeat has made it difficult for Guyana to make it through to the next round.

Brendon McCullum won the toss and invited the Amazon Warriors to bat first. They lost their first 3 wickets in very quick succession and at one stage were in deep trouble when they lost 3 wickets for just 39 runs. Sunil Narine looked in great rhythm, and he did put brakes on the Guyana innings. He only gave away 11 runs in 4 overs and took the all important wicket of Martin Guptill.

Jason Mohammed was the only Guyana batsman who found his stride at the crease. He played a fighting inning when his team was in a dire situation and ensured that Guyana saved themselves from an embarrassment and reached the score of 130.

Captain’s knock

Guyana set up a target of 131 for Trinbago Knight Riders which was a below par score by any standards. To make a game out of it, they needed early wickets to build pressure on Trinbago. They dismissed the opener Sunil Narine and his replacement at the crease Colin Munro in the first 3 overs with just the addition of 18 runs to the total. Trinbago now needed their captain Brendon McCullum to fire.

Darren Bravo joined McCullum at the crease and both of them built a good partnership. When Bravo was dismissed Trinbago were in good position and pretty much on course to overhaul the target with a lot of overs to spare. The New Zealander ensured there were no troubles whatsoever as he took up the initiative and started dominating the Guyana bowlers. Denesh Ramdin held up the other end, trying to feed strike to McCullum as much as possible.

In the end, the skipper remained unbeaten scoring 65 runs in 45 balls as Trinbago Knight Riders achieved their target with 25 balls remaining.
