The Scorchers from Perth who looked almost unbeatable this season riding on a four-match winning streak bumped into Brisbane Heat for their 5th game. And it changed, they not only lost the game, and their winning run but also conceded the top spot in the points table as Heat won the match in a convincing fashion by 49 runs.

Their famed opening pair of Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum would face the bowlers quite used to taking wickets in David Willey, Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye. Both the openers got off to a start but couldn’t cross the 40-run mark. Tye who has been so good picking wickets in the middle overs got just one this time while the batters came hard at him.

Among the five bowlers used by the Scorchers, he was the most expensive spending runs at 11.75 in his 4 overs. Lower down the order Ben Cutting dealt in sixes and in his knock of 46 from 20 balls plundered as many as five. He took the team total to 191/6 in 20 overs and Heat knew they had an advantage with that kind of a score.

To defend it they had the likes of Joe Burns, Yasir Shah, Mark Steketee and Brendan Doggett at their disposal. Steketee and Doggett had a field day as they dealt blows one after the other to leave the defending champions breathless. The Queensland medium-pacer Doggett returned with his best T20 bowling figures as he claimed a five-wicket haul.

Willey (25), Michael Klinger (15), Hilton Cartwright (0), AJ Turner (18) and skipper Adam Voges (13) all failed to get going and the lower order was left with a little too much to do. Though Ashton Agar and Tim David tried to get things back on track the ask was too tall for them to scale.

Scorchers were eventually folded up in the 19th over for 142 as they lost the match by a huge 49-run margin.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to a game that didn’t quite unfold the way they expected:
