The iconic venue of MCG was on redemption mode after playing out a dead rubber in the fourth Ashes Test. The venue was set to host the BBL encounter between the Melbourne Stars and the Brisbane Heat. Both sides entered the contest with contrasting fortunes. While the Brisbane Heat walked in with the winning momentum, the Stars had faced two consecutive defeats in their last two fixtures.

Amidst this backdrop, the action unfolded at the MCG. The Heats were expected to steamroll the opposition. And as things turned out to be on the day, they indeed managed to outplay the Stars. Chasing a modest total of 142 for the win, the Brisbane Heat made a mockery of the new ball bowling of the Stars.

Skipper Brendon McCullum led from the front with a whirlwind fifty to his name. He was well supported by his Bash brother Chris Lynn. The two batsmen added 101 for the opening wicket in just 64 deliveries. After McCullum’s departure on a quickfire 61 off 30 balls, Lynn took centerstage. He remained unbeaten on 63 off 46 deliveries to ensure a 9 wicket win for the Heats.

Earlier in the game, the Brisbane Heat skipper Brendon McCullum had won the toss and opted to field first. His bowlers responded very well by bowling exceptional spells. Mitchell Swepson and Yasir Shah, in particular, were very economical. While Swepson gave away 14 runs in his four over spell, Yasir leaked just 16 runs in his quota of overs.

Swepson finished with 3 wickets to his name, and Yasir had the wicket of opener Ben Dunk to his credit. He dismissed Dunk in the 3rd over of the match. Luke Wright (19 off 21 balls) found it tough middling the ball on the day and so did his former English teammate Kevin Pietersen (30 off 25 balls).

Swepson accounted for both their dismissals. Had there not been Glenn Maxwell’s fighting 50 off 39 balls, the innings seemed to have been crashing under 120. Maxwell’s knock helped the Stars crawl up to 141/7 in their stipulated 20 overs.

From hailing Swepson’s phenomenal spell to Baz’s sensational hitting, the Twitterati loved the overall dominance of the Brisbane Heat.
