After a day’s break, it was time for the action to begin once again. It was a game between two sides with contrasting fortunes. While Lahore Qalandars had won both their matches, Multan Sultans had lost both their games. Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and decided that the Multan side will bowl first. This decision came as no surprise as all the matches thus far had been won by the teams chasing.

The Lahore side having one of the best batting line-ups in the tournament would’ve looked for a score around 200 to put pressure on the chasing team. They got off to a disastrous start as they lost both the openers for single-digit scores. Joe Denly and Mohammad Hafeez now had to steady the ship for their side. They did the job wonderfully as they were involved in an 89 run partnership for the third wicket.

Hafeez played an aggressive knock scoring 60 in just 35 balls. His inning included three boundaries and five maximums. Denly played a supporting knock as he scored 31 off 29 balls. Critics may say that he played too slow but perhaps that was the need of the hour. Post their dismissal the finishers could not do much and the side got to only 157 at the end of their 20 overs. Carlos Brathwaite was the pick of the bowlers as he got two wickets conceding only 20 runs in his four overs.

Mohammad Rizwan continues his dream run

A target of 158 was never a worrying one however the early dismissals of Chris Lynn and James Vince gave an opening to the Qalandars. The new man in, Sohaib Maqsood was in no mood to let the match go out of hand. He along with his captain played an aggressive brand of cricket to seal the game in only 16.2 overs.

Rizwan scored 76 off 49 balls while Maqsood stayed unbeaten on 61 at the end of their innings. The former was eventually dismissed but the game was dead by then. Shaheen Afridi bowled well once again as he got two wickets conceding only 29 runs in the game where the other bowlers seemed to have no answers. The Multan side won by seven wickets to open their account in the tournament.
