Australia's leading run scorer in T20Is and the skipper who led them to their maiden T20 World Cup title, Aaron Finch, has called time on his international career after announcing his retirement from T20Is on Tuesday, February 7. Finch's retirement from the format means that he won't be donning the Australian jersey anymore since he retired from the 50-over format last year.

The 36-year-old has been one of the most loyal servants in Australian cricket, especially in the shorter formats of the game. A popular figure in the dressing room, Finch tasted success with the national team after lifting the 50-over World Cup in 2015. The explosive opener is arguably one of the most destructive batters in white-ball cricket and holds the record for the highest score by a batter in T20Is.

Finch's decision to retire from T20Is was predicted by many, as the batter had endured a lean run of form in the last six months, with the next edition of the T20 World Cup still a distant memory. The Aussie star will continue playing domestic cricket and will be representing the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL.

While Pat Cummins took over the captaincy duties in the 50-over format last year, it is unlikely that the pacer will be considered for the T20I role. Former Australian skipper Steve Smith might get the opportunity to lead the team after showing his capabilities with the bat for the Sydney Sixers in the recently concluded BBL edition. However, the departing cricketer has indicated at several new faces who are capable of leading the side with Ashton Turner understood to be the front-runner for the position.

Finch's capabilities with the bat will be a huge loss for the national team as his opening partner David Warner is also nearing the latter stages of his career. It will be interesting to see how the team management copes with the departure of their influential skipper, who will go down as one of the legends of white-ball cricket.
