Australia witnessed a so close, yet so far moment in The Oval as despite being in the driver’s seat for the majority part of the fourth innings, the Pat Cummins-led side suffered a 49-run defeat. Australia had the glorious chance to write history by winning their first series on English soil in 22 years but Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali reigned supreme in the middle, helping England make an empathic return out of nowhere.
Notably, the Aussie openers were brilliant on Day 4, giving the visiting team a platform to chase 384 runs. However, on Day 5, neither of them could take it to the next level as Chris Woakes and Mark Wood sent them back to the pavilion. Marnus Labuschagne too failed to click as the entire responsibility fell on Steven Smith and Travis Head. Despite the pressure, both these cricketers looked in brilliant touch as their 95 runs partnership helped the Aussies build momentum.
Going to the lunch break, they had the wickets in hand, time, and also the momentum but post break, everything changed. Australia had little to no answer to Moeen Ali’s deadly bowling as the spinner picked up crucial wickets of Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Pat Cummins. Notably, Ali faced a lot of backlash in the ongoing Ashes 2023 for not being impactful but skipper Ben Stokes backed him a lot, and eventually, England got its result as the cricketer changed the complexion of the game.
Later into the match, stumper-batter Alex Carey and Todd Murphy built a crucial partnership but the veteran pacer Stuart Broad in his farewell game gave the ultimate gift to the English fans. Interestingly, in the hope of getting a breakthrough, Broad changed the bails and on the very next delivery, Broad managed to dismiss Murphy. Nasser Hussain on the commentary box was elated with that and it eventually shaped England’s fate.
Minutes later, Broad picked up the final wicket and with that, the cricketer brought an end to his iconic career. The series ended on level terms but Australia retain the Ashes while England will be more than proud of their incredible effort in the last three Tests.
