A vociferous crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad were treated to a batting masterclass from Gujarat Titans star Indian opener, Shubman Gill. The stylish Indian opener became the first Gujarat Titans batter to register a century in IPL history after he breached the three-figure mark against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Gujarat Titans were delivered a hammer blow when an in-form Wriddhiman Saha was sent packing by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the very first over without a run on the board. Following a sedated first over, Saha's opening partner, Shubman Gill, got into the groove with a delightful stroke against Bhuvneshwar.
However, it was Fazalhaq Farooqi's first over of the match, which saw the dazzling Indian opener take the attack to the Sunrisers' bowlers as he smashed four consecutive boundaries against the Afghan pacer. Gill continued to pile the pressure on the visitors as he dispatched opposition skipper Aiden Markram for two consecutive boundaries in his first over.
The young Indian opener, who was dismissed for a cheap score in his previous outing against Mumbai Indians, took down Mayank Markande in the first over after the powerplay, registering a blistering half-century, his fifth of the season. Meanwhile, his batting partner, Sai Sudharsan, did not let off the pressure from the other end as the duo took their side past the 100-run mark in the tenth over.
Gill registers his name in the history books
Gill, who is renowned for his impeccable timing and glorious stroke-making abilities, was quite severe on anything short from the SRH bowlers, cutting and pulling the balls to the ropes frequently. Even though Sai Sudharsan's departure broke their mammoth 147-run stand, Titans' highest partnership in IPL history, the 23-year-old continued his onslaught from the other end.
Although the home side lost a flurry of wickets in the death overs, the stylish opener was in no mood to let go of the chance of scoring a memorable century for a second time this season. The home crowd erupted in joy after he breached the three-figure mark in 56 deliveries to register his maiden IPL century.
He also breached the 1000-run mark for the franchise in just his 29th appearance, becoming the first GT batter to the landmark. Overall, he is the third fastest to score 1000 runs for a franchise, behind KL Rahul (Punjab) and Robin Uthappa (KKR).
