Indian captain Rohit Sharma departed cheaply in the World Test Championship 2023 final between Australia and India. The opening batter could only score 15(26) as he got trapped in front of the stumps by Australian captain Pat Cummins. Sharma looked in good touch as he got off the mark with a splendid boundary in the first over against Mitchell Starc.
However, he couldn’t continue his knock and got out cheaply giving Australia their first success. Notably, the right-handed batter scored a magnificent hundred in India’s last Test at the Oval in 2021. Sharma played a magnificent innings of 127 in the second innings as India registered a memorable victory by 157 runs back then.
Coming into the final, Rohit had the highest average in England from the current squad (over 40). However, the Indian captain let his team down in the big game. The 36-year-old has failed to cross the 40-run mark in his last six innings now.
After Rohit’s dismissal, India got their second blow soon after, as Scott Boland destroyed Shubman Gill's stumps in the very next over. The 23-year-old completely misjudged the ball and left an incoming delivery which headed straight to his stumps. As a result, India were in a spot of bother early in the innings at 30/2 after 7 overs.
India finished the second session on 37/2 after 10 overs, 432 runs behind Australia with Cheteshwar Pujara (3*) and Virat Kohli (4*) at the crease. India’s hopes of replying with a strong total are pinned on the pair of Kohli and Pujara.
Steve Smith and Travis Head guide Australia to 469 in the first innings
Earlier, Australia posted a massive total of 469 in the first innings after being put in to bat first by India. Steve Smith (121) and Travis Head (163) were the wrecker-in-chief for the Pat Cummins-led side as the duo sucked the juice out of Indian bowling with their massive 285-run partnership.
Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers for India with his spell of (4/108) in 28.3 overs while Mohammed Shami (2/122) and Shardul Thakur (2/83) picked up two wickets each.
