Day 2 of the World Test Championship final (WTC) 2023 saw Australia notch up a mammoth 469 runs on the board after the first innings. Steve Smith and Travis Head were sensational with the bat for Australia. Both batters completed their centuries, with Head even crossing the 150-run mark. Smith scored 121 runs in 268 deliveries, whereas Head amassed 163 runs to his name in 174 balls to propel Australia to the big total.
As India came in to bat, the side got off to the worst of starts as the top-order of the side failed to make an impact on the game. Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma were unable to perform against the relentless attack of Australia’s bowling lineup.
Gill was dismissed for 13 runs, whereas Rohit only managed to score 15 runs before he was sent packing. Furthermore, the misery for India did not end there, as the side lost veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara quite early on as well.
Pujara came in to bat after the fall of the first wicket. However, the 35-year-old was sent packing in identical fashion as Gill, who was dismissed by Scott Boland after he failed to judge the ball and left the delivery as it struck the off stump.
Pujara’s story in the first innings was quite similar as well. Failing to judge the delivery, the ball was pitched outside off, however, it angled back in to strike the top of off stump, and Pujara was sent packing as well. As Cameron Green took his first wicket of the innings, the all-rounder added to team India’s woes on day 2 of the WTC final. Pujara was dismissed for just 14 runs.
Following their brilliance with the bat in the first innings, the Aussies have followed it up with a just as impressive performance with the ball. Piling early pressure onto the Indian batters, the Pat Cummins-led side has managed to strike early.
