The 36th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) was contested at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) taking on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Virat Kohli, the RCB's stand-in captain, won the toss and chose to field first. However, the tables turned as KKR got off to a flying start at the high-scoring venue.
RCB is one of the IPL franchises having some effective players in their squad. They did not, however, play well with the ball against the Nitish Rana-led side. Notably, the fielding was also poor, with RCB players dropping several easy catches.
While the KKR batters continued to dominate, the RCB players failed to perform as an entire unit. Moreover, fans mocked the RCB players for their poor fielding and dropping sitters against KKR. They particularly dropped the catches of big players like Nitish Rana, Andre Russel, and Rinku Singh.
KR openers Jason Roy (56 off 29) and Narayan Jagadeesan (27 off 29) made a solid start as the Nitish Rana-led side were 66/0 in the powerplay. However, Vijaykumar Vyshak came into the attack and provided a massive breakthrough for RCB, dismissing both KKR openers in the same over.
Later, Venkatesh Iyer and skipper Nitish Rana came in to bat and carried the KKR innings on their shoulders. Venkatesh scored 31 off 26 balls before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga. Meanwhile, Rana scored a quick 48 runs from just 21 balls, including three fours and four sixes. Notably, he was also dismissed by the Sri Lankan all-rounder.
After that, Rinku Singh (18*) and David Wiese (12*) also provided worthwhile contributions as KKR set a massive 201-run target for the hosts. Apart from Hasaranga and Vyshak, Mohammed Siraj also picked one wicket.
KKR's first win of the ongoing season came against RCB, which they won by 81 runs. The franchise managed to break their four-match losing streak with a win over RCB as the dropped catches helped them score big runs, and brilliance by bowlers helped KKR defend their target.
