The highly-anticipated second Test between India and England got underway in Visakhapatnam on Friday, February 2. India made three changes to their playing XI, as Rajat Patidar got his maiden Test cap. Kuldeep Yadav and Mukesh Kumar were the other players who got the nod in the team. They replaced the trio of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Siraj.

England, on the other hand, stuck to the playing XI they named on Thursday, as James Anderson and Shoaib Bashir stepped in for Mark Wood and Jack Leach. Team India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sharma got their team off to a watchful start, as the duo added 40 runs inside the first 18 overs. The Indian captain played an uncharacteristic innings of 14 off 41 balls before becoming the first international victim of debutant Bashir.

Shubman Gill, who has been in woeful form as of late, scored 34 off 46 balls before James Anderson dismissed him for the fifth time in seven innings. Yashasvi stood firm at one end and scored his second Test century along with it being his first ton on the home soil. He stitched a 90-run stand off 131 balls alongside Shreyas Iyer, who contributed only 27 runs in the partnership.

After Iyer departed for a 59-ball 27, Patidar joined Yashasvi in the middle. The 30-year-old gave a good account of himself before being unfortunately dismissed for 32. Axar Patel came out to bat at No. 6 and formed the third consecutive partnership that went beyond 50 for India. The all-rounder was eventually dismissed for 27 in the 86th over of the day. KS Bharat hit a flurry of boundaries before departing for 17.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Yashasvi Jaiswal took India to stumps, as the home side finished on 336/6 at the end of 93 overs on Day 1 of the second Test of the ongoing series. The Mumbai batter finished unbeaten on 179 off 257 balls, hitting 17 fours and five sixes.

Among the England bowlers, James Anderson looked quite menacing, as he bowled miserly and asked some tough questions to the Indian batters. The 20-year-old Bashir was also impressive with his off-spin bowling, as he used his height nicely and managed to achieve sharp turn and bounce on a few occasions. He picked up a couple of wickets and it would do a lot of good to his confidence.
