The Eliminator of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the five-time champions Mumbai Indians and the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, May 24.
Coming in to bat first, Mumbai got off to a subpar start to the game as Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma both failed to make an impact. Kishan was dismissed for 15 runs, whereas Rohit only managed to score 11 runs. However, it was the knocks of Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav that stabilised the innings for the five-time champions.
Green scored 41 runs in 23 balls, with Suryakumar scoring 33 runs in 20 balls. Furthermore, Tilak Varma scored 26 runs in 22 deliveries, and Nehal Wadhera amassed 23 runs in 12 balls. The combined effort with the bat helped Mumbai post 182 runs on the board.
Naveen-ul-Haq was the highest wicket-taker for Lucknow Super Giants in the first innings; the pacer took four wickets and conceded 38 runs in four overs. Yash Thakur took three wickets as well, conceding 34 runs in four overs. With Mohsin Khan striking once.
Brilliance with the ball propel MI to emphatic win
Coming in to chase the target down, Lucknow got off to the worst of starts as both openers Kyle Mayers and Prerak Mankad failed to make an impact on the game. Mayers was sent back to the pavilion for 18 runs, whereas Mankad was sent packing for just three runs.
Skipper Krunal Pandya was sent back to the pavilion early as well. However, it was the innings of Marcus Stoinis that provided some hope for the side. The Australian batter scored 40 runs in 27 balls before he was run out by Tim David.
Stoinis was the highest run-getter for Lucknow; however, the rest of the batters could not amount to much as they crumbled under the relentless attack of Mumbai’s bowling. Akash Madhwal was influential for the five-time champions with the ball during the run chase.
Madhwal bowled 3.3 overs in the game, taking five wickets and conceding five runs. Furthermore, Chris Jordan and Piyush Chawla took one wicket each, and as Mumbai won the game by 81 runs they made their way into Qualifier 2, where they take on Gujarat Titans.
