SA20 2023: Donavon Ferreira shines in Joburg Super Kings' win over Durban Super Giants

Joburg Super Kings pulled off a thrilling 16-run win over Durban Super Giants in the second match of the SA20 2023 at Kingsmead, Durban, on January 11. The exciting prospect Donavon Ferreira made a big impact with an unbeaten 82 off 40 help the Super Kings score a big total of 190/6. In the chase, the Super Giants started well, with captain Quinton de Kock smashing 78 runs off 52 balls but were restricted to just 174/5. 

Faf du Plessis won the toss for the Super Kings and elected to bat first, but his decision backfired as the team lost openers Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks early. The star spinner Keshav Maharaj caught and bowled Reeza while Dwaine Pretorius dismissed Malan with just eight runs on the scoreboard.

Spinner Prenelan Subrayen then took two big wickets, dismissing Kyle Verreynee and Lewis Gregory in the sixth over to leave the Super Giants struggling at 27/4. But du Plessis (39 off 33) and Donovan pulled off a crucial 72-run partnership for the fifth wicket to get their team back in the game.

After the recovery, Ferreira dominated the last six overs while and Romario Shephered also smahed 40 off 19 to help the Super Kings to 190/6 in 20 overs. Subrayen took two wickets while Maharaj proved economically best bowler for the Super Giants with figures of 1/23. 

Durban started their innings with openers de Kock and Kyle Mayers putting a brilliant 98-run partnership in just 11 overs. However, Aaron Phangiso gave the Super Kings the opening they needed with Mayers' wicket. Ferreira then dismissed the dangerous de Kock in the 14th over to change the momentum of the game. Mayers scored 39 off 30 while de Kock smashed 78 off 52.

The Super Giants struggled for the big shots in the death overs and were restricted to 174/5, with Alzarri Joseph taking big wickets of Heinrich Klaassen and Dwaine Pretorius in last three overs. Ferreira won the Player of the Match award for his heroics with bat and an impressive 1/28 spell with a ball for Joburg Super Kings.
