At the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and chose to bat first. The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, stated that he was comfortable batting second here because the surface appeared to be decent. India entirely dominated the T20 series against the Lankans.
The first ODI between Sri Lanka and India ended in a tie putting the Indian players at the later stage for a big role.
Asitha Fernando was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj for just a single, giving him the first wicket of the match. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis were on a promising 43-run partnership until Shivam Dube, playing in his first ODI since December 2019, claimed his first-ever ODI wicket.
Mendis and skipper Asalanka were removed for the same scores, and shortly after Nissanka, who had reached his 14th ODI half-century with composure, was removed for 56. Those removed in their twenties, Janith Liyanage and Wanindu Hasaranga, may have felt their innings were coming to an early conclusion. Nonetheless, Dunith Wellalage and Akila Dananjaya's passionate 46-run eighth-wicket stand (off 39 balls) helped Sri Lanka reach 230/8.
Alongside Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma assumed the role of the aggressor as the run-chase got off to a fast start. India amassed 71 runs in the powerplay despite a maiden over. But from over 11 to 16, India went into a tailspin, scoring only 16 runs and losing three vital wickets. This included the skipper, who, following a windy fifty runs, became Wellalage's second fatality.
It was up to Shivam Dube to seal the win after KL Rahul and Axar Patel both made significant contributions in their thirties but were unable to expand on their beginnings. Dube put on an excellent show, hitting several boundaries to reach 25, including two sixes and a four.
However, Asalanka trapped him leg before wicket, ending his innings before it had begun. Following this dismissal, Arshdeep Singh came to the crease but, on the very next delivery, gave in to the pressure as well, capping an incredible comeback for Sri Lanka. Considering India's stance after the initial power play, Sri Lanka will surely consider this result a major victory. In the history of the ODI format, this was India's tenth tie match overall and the second between the two teams; the first one was played in 2012.
