With the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 finally getting underway, it was Mumbai Indians crossed swords against Gujarat Giants in the season opener of the tournament. As both the teams faced each other in their quest for the first victory of the season, Mumbai Indians got off to a sensational start in the match.

Beth Mooney's Gujarat Giants won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Dr. DY. Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. The Giants got the perfect start to the game as Yastika Bhatia was sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers much. However, it was Hayley Matthews who provided Mumbai with some stability with her knock of 47 runs off 31 deliveries.

Undoubtedly, the star of the first innings was skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who played a fabulous knock (65 runs off 30 deliveries). Kaur’s explosive knock helped Mumbai notch up a massive target on the scoreboard in the first match of the tournament.

She also found a stable batting partner in Amelia Kerr, who scored some important runs for the team as well. The 22-year-old scored an unbeaten 45 off 24 deliveries as the bowling line-up of Gujarat looked helpless against the relentless attack of Mumbai Indians.

Gujarat Giants have mountain to climb as they look towards massive run chase

The first match of the WPL has not disappointed so far, and it seems like it is going to be a thrilling run chase for Gujarat Giants as they need to chase a target of 208 runs to win the game. The batting line-up of Gujarat Giants will have to come through if they want to win the game and get off to a winning start.
